The Gas Station Hatch
Want to know the secret to finding out what's hatching before you hit the water?
The night before you head out, take a trip to your local gas station.
That's right, the best fishing advice sometimes comes not from the guy behind the counter at the fly shop, but while you're filling up.
Find a local gas station - or even a Dunkin Donuts - that is within 500 yards of your local stream.
During the prime season, make a point to stop by regularly a few hours after dark.
Gas staions - and Dunkin Donuts, 7-Elevns and other 24-hour businesses - have bright lights designed to draw the customers in.
Perched near a river, these lights also draw in your local insects and are a great way for you to quickly find out what's hatching and how heavy the hatch is.
Give it a try, you'll be surprised.
